The Perm – You Love It or You Hate It
Perm: hideously wavy hair, or stunningly curly locks – you be the judge. Of all the hairstyles out there, a perm (called this because of the method used to create the effect) is by far one of the most well known, even though not that many people are educated on what it involves, or what style it even produces for that matter.
Just imagine for a moment that you have incredibly straight hair. If you were to decide that you actually looked better with curly hair, there are only a few options available to you.
Firstly, you could buy a pair of curling tongs, and use these on a daily basis to achieve a somewhat curly appearance. This is a fairly cost effective thing to do – however the demands on you time will be immense, as the curls will simply vanish if your hair gets wet when you shower.
This is the same for if it rains, or even if it is humid. Obviously, this fact alone presents numerous problems for people who want permanently curly hair, but are unable to achieve this look given their time constraints.
The Chemical Solution
Thank goodness for chemical compounds. The second of our options to transform straight hair in to the curly opposite is to visit the hairdresser and request a perm.
This is a chemical process in which large prongs are placed in to the hair to curl the strands, and a chemical is applied to ensure that the hair stays in the same position for an extended period of time.
Assuming that you follow all the instructions of a perm (such as not to wash you hair for the 48 hours following the procedure), you should be able to keep the style consistent for the following 2 to 3 months – depending on the features of your hair.
This is a much more practical solution for those who are generally pushed for time – as it means they have to spend just a few hours sitting down whilst the perm is done.
Additionally, the expense of the procedure is outweighed by the fact that it lasts for a whole lot longer than what could be achieved with curling tongs alone.
So there you have it – perms! Not as hard as you might have thought.
