How Hairstyles Have Evolved Over Time

Compare a photograph of the same person between now and 20 years ago, and you will probably notice that the main difference (other than age) is the hairstyle that the person has.

The evolution of the hairdo is a topic which many people simply take for granted. There is very little research out there to provide a specific chronology or timeline of when mainstream hairstyles came in and went out of fashion. Instead, we are left simply to observe, and keep up with the changing tide.

But one question which does has a possible (and rather simple) answer is: “Why have hairstyles changed at all?”

The answer is what the rest of this article will be about.

New Times Call For New Measures

Think back (if you can) to the 1960’s and 70’s. Remember the invention of hair gel? We are sure that you do. This is because everyone, no matter what their hair looked like prior to the time, had a new hairstyle within a few months of the product being launched to the general public. People loved the new invention – and hence the “slick” hairstyle was born.

This is a classic example of how new times (and in this case – new inventions) lead ultimately to a mainstream change in society. People would have wondered why on earth you would want to purposely put sticky, gunky gel in your hair prior to the invention.

Nowadays however, it’s evident that things have evolved even further. All you need to do is walk in to any hair salon, and take a look at the retail products section. Incredibly, there will be more items there for more reasons than you could ever have imagined.

Hair gel is a big industry – and it’s a well known fact that as consumers, we spend upwards of 2 billion dollars each year to finance this sticky product.

Don’t Fall Behind

On a side note – one of the other reasons why hairstyles have changed so dramatically over time is that people have a keen willingness to stay ahead of the times. For most consumers, societal pressures dictate that there is no excuse for lagging behind in widespread trends – and the most important aspect of this is that people do indeed take note of it.

Given all of that information, it should now be obvious why hairstyles have changed so much over recent decades.
